“Words & Wine” at The Sorrento Hotel

9 Nov

The Sorrento Hotel

A few weeks back, I was invited by Kim Ricketts to attend one of her “Words & Wine” events. According to her website, Kim founded Book Events in July of 2003 with the goal of “connecting authors and books with readers in a wide variety of non-traditional venues, from corporate campuses to cocktail parties.” Seeing as I love both reading AND wine, I jumped at the opportunity to check it out. This event was held at The Sorrento Hotel in Seattle’s “First Hill” neighborhood and featured author Steven Johnson. Johnson has been on a national tour promoting his new book titled “Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation”. With a title like that, I was hooked for sure.

Author Steven Johnson speaking with guests

The Sorrento Hotel is located on the corner of Madison St & Terry Ave. so I was able to find ample street parking especially since the event was at 7pm. I believe the hotel has valet parking which might even be complementary (don’t forget a tip though!). The entrance to the hotel is so charming with it’s circular driveway accented with a fountain in the middle . The hotel opened in 1909 and has very elegantly maintained some of that “old world” feel. Inside, the theme continues with wood paneling on almost every wall, rich colors in the carpeting and furniture upholstery and the theme even extends to what I’m assuming are the original, and very tiny, hotel elevators. Once inside the event, I got to meet author Steven Johnson, sipped on some complementary wine and grabbed a few appetizers before the interview began. Warren Etheredge, from The Warren Report, interviewed Johnson which provided the audience with some great sneak peeks into the content of the book. I don’t want to give away any details because you should go out and buy it yourself! After the interview, the floor was opened up to everyone for a few questions and then Johnson signed our books before the evening was over (a copy of the book is included in the ticket price for Words & Wine events).  The one “message” of the evening that struck a cord with me was that good ideas can come from diversifying our environments which could mean anything from meeting new people to going to a new coffee shop to work.  This idea is exactly why Seattle Revealed was started – to get Seattleites out and about and trying new things instead of just doing the same ole’ same ole’. Not only is this what we at SR preach but also what we strive to do ourselves so that we can bring you, our readers, insight on what’s new and interesting in this great city of ours.

If you want to attend a “Words and Wine” event for yourself, the next one  is this week on November 10th (at The Sorrento Hotel of course) and features author Laurie David who will be speaking about her book titled “The Family Dinner: Great Ways to Connect With Your Kids, One Meal at a Time”.
